Week 10

Themes!!

Understanding and using themes can be one of the most satisfying speech techniques these students can master.  It is the icing on the cake to a speech!

We watched an excellent example of a speech sweetly smothered with the theme of music and song.  The students wrote down every word or phrase that was sprinkled through out the speech that was part of the theme.

If they caught other examples of speech techniques swirled in, they wrote those down too.  They picked out the topic, a bunch of alliteration, and topped it all off with finding an allusion to Shakespeare.

You might have noticed I lightly used the theme of a cake in this post.  If this were a speech, I could have blended in any of the following words:

bite sized
baked
blissful
carefully crafted
divine
drenched
drizzled
enticing
devilishly good
dusted
exquisite
creamy
flaky
fresh
gourmet
garnished
glazed
heaping
heavenly
homemade
lavish
layered
melt-in-your-mouth
moist
scrumptious
sinful
sugar coated
smothered
tempting
scrumptious
yummy
wholesome

warm

Homework:
  • Start thinking of a prepared speech for a speech contest at the end of the semester.  Complete with trophies!
  • Read pgs 43-47
  • Decide on a problem in the world the matters to you.  Using a phone or other device, record a 3-5 minute video sharing your thoughts and solutions on the topic.  Consider uploading it to the FILA Facebook group page.
